Becoming an Asthma Educator Care Manager (BAECM)
This is a half day course is dedicated to educating participants to holistically approach the education of patients and families with asthma. Core topics discussed are asthma prevalence, goals of therapy, pathophysiology, controlling factors that contribute to severity, pharmacotherapy, medication administration, monitor symptoms, co-morbidities and optimizing education. Application of core topics is reviewed though interactive case studies.Participants should have an interest in improving patient and families with asthma.
Objectives:
- Describe the burden of Asthma in the United States.
- Outline key components of Asthma management from EPR-3.
- Evaluate patients and caregivers educational need and select management tools to optimize partnerships in care.
AAE's National Asthma Educator Certification and Recertification Review Course
The core concepts of this one and one half day course are based on the National Asthma Educator Board (NAECB) content outline. It is designed to help participants recall, apply, and analyze key concepts in the management of patients and families with asthma. The comprehensive cases and device workshop, where all participants receive an inhalation device kit, aid in application of materials. Emphasis is placed on board exam preparation. Participants should have a working knowledge of asthma and be schedule to take the NAECB board exam or preparing for certification as an asthma educator (AE-C) within the next year.
Sampling of Objectives:
- Explain the process of registering and taking the national asthma certification exam.
- Describe the pathophysiologic changes that occur in the airway that relate to acute and chronic asthma.
- Identify the goals of asthma therapy and indicators of loss of control.
- Describe the key patient educational points for asthma medications.
- Outline care, cleaning and changing protocols for inhalation devices
- Identify proper peak flow meter technique, indications and limitations.
- Define spirometric measurements.
- Develop a patients specific Asthma Action Plan.
- Explain asthma related triggers in the home, school, and workplace.
- List co-morbid conditions that can affect control in individuals with asthma and strategies to minimize or eliminated conditions.
- Identify health beliefs and barriers to adherence as they apply to self –assessment and self management in persons and families with asthma.
- List outcomes one can measure before and after asthma education.
